A man with a knife hijacked a school bus in central Arkansas Thursday morning, taking 11 elementary school students and their original driver on a detour that police ended after a roughly 10-mile chase, authorities said.
Nicholas John Miller, 22, was arrested after the incident, which began in the Little Rock suburb of Jacksonville and ended in nearby Cabot, Jacksonville police Capt. Kenny Boyd said.
The bus had stopped nearby, and Miller left the woman, boarded the bus and, armed with the knife, took over the driver's seat, Jacksonville police said.
Miller was being charged Thursday with a felony count of vehicle piracy, 12 felony counts of kidnapping, and two felony counts of aggravated assault, Jacksonville police spokeswoman April Kiser said.

Former rally driver Tahar Karya is an expert at tackling the Sahara's sand dunes in his fourbyfour. He was George Lucas's personal driver during the filming in Tunisia and has a personal attachment to the set.
He believes that Lucas's decision to use the area in his film was a great boon for the region. More than 1,500 background actors were employed. Agencies and hotels also benefited, he says. Over a period of twoandahalf months, (Lucas) brought activities to the region and beneficial economic activity. We hope he comes back here again.
The crew faced difficulties dealing with the weather in the Sahara. Temperatures reached 135 degrees Fahrenheit (57 C) during filming, then production was slowed by a rare summer rainstorm. Still, facing scheduling and budget constraints, Lucas was able to get the scenes he needed, which appear in Star Wars movies The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

But for those who want to experience this important piece of film history, time is running out. Although the set has withstood the elements for more than a decade, the desert's sand dunes are moving to engulf the fictional town.
Ever since they finished the part of the movie shot in 2003, sand dunes have surrounded the film set from every side. They should not have allowed this to happen, says Tahar.
A team of scientists has tracked the movement of a large sand dune, which has already started to cover the set. it is moving at a rate of 4 cm per day and It won't be long before this alien town is buried beneath the sand.
Like any desert Oasis, this one too will soon disappear.

Each day tourists mostly from Europe arrive by the car load. Trips to the abandoned film set are included in hotel vacation packages and it's one of the few things that will draw visitors into the bakinghot desert.
What really matters to Tahar is that the tourists keep coming, especially because the country is struggling to rebuild its economy after its 2011 revolution.

In another public embarrassment for the Air Force's nuclear missile program two crew members were disciplined earlier this year for leaving silo blast doors open while they were on duty in an underground facility housing nuclear missiles.
The incidents first reported by the Associated Press were confirmed Wednesday by the Air Force.
Under Air Force regulations a two-man missile launch crew is required to keep the underground blast door shut when one crew member is asleep during the 24-hour shift.
In April a crew member was found derelict in his duties in that he left the blast door open in order to receive a food delivery from the onsite chef while the other crew member was on an authorized sleep break Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. John Sheets said in a statement.
The crew member who was found derelict received a punishment of forfeiting 2246 in pay for each of two months. The other crew member admitted to similar misconduct on a few occasions and received a letter of admonishment. The April incident occurred at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota

PARIS — When people ask what I’m working on these days, I tell them about my new book, “How French People Take Out the Garbage.” It’s all about the elegant, common-sense Gallic approach to trash, which I, of course, refer to as les poubelles.
I’m joking, but who knows? The book could be a surprise success — my very own “Springtime for Hitler.” It would certainly have lots of company. A spate of new how-the-French-do-it books have recently been published or are en route, with titles like “French Women Don’t Get Facelifts,” “Mastering the Art of French Eating,” “Forever Chic” and “Ooh La La! French Women’s Secrets to Feeling Beautiful Every Day.” (Full disclosure: I’ve added some books to this genre, too.)
It’s easy enough to mock these titles. They sit at the unfortunate intersection of America’s love-hate relationship with France, and that most risible branch of American letters: self-help.
And yet, it’s no accident that there’s been a surge in self-help books whose inspiration isn’t a shrink, celebrity or C.E.O. — but another country. They’re part of a larger shift in the way Americans relate to the rest of the world. Increasingly, they are looking abroad for wisdom about all kinds of things — not just how to choose a signature fragrance.
Americans have always had an eye on other countries, of course. But we used to fixate on a particular enemy or competitor — the Soviet Union, or Japan. And mostly we were trying to beat these countries, not emulate them. In the case of the Soviet Union, we didn’t actually know much about it, which made it easier to believe that America was somehow beyond comparison.
These days, there are international league tables ranking the United States against dozens of countries, in hundreds of categories. These findings — along with the war in Iraq and the financial crisis — have chipped away at some ideas we’ve long had about ourselves. For instance, new studies of social mobility show that people in Canada and much of Western Europe now have an easier time than we do of realizing the “American dream” of becoming richer than their parents.
Another blow has come from a test called the Program for International Student Assessment, known as PISA, which measures how well 15-year-olds around the world can apply reading, math and science skills to real-life problems — in other words, how prepared they are for the modern workplace. The first results were published in 2000.

Andersson and Ulvaeus began collaborating with Tim Rice in early 1983 on writing songs for the musical project Chess, while Fältskog and Lyngstad both concentrated on international solo careers. While Andersson and Ulvaeus were working on the musical, a further co-operation among the three of them came with the musical Abbacadabra that was produced in France for television. It was a children's musical utilising 14 ABBA songs. Alain and Daniel Boublil, who wrote Les Misérables, had been in touch with Stig Anderson about the project, and the TV musical was aired over Christmas on French TV and later a Dutch version was also broadcast. Boublil previously also wrote the French lyric for Mireille Mathieu's version of "The Winner Takes It All".
Lyngstad, who had recently moved to Paris, participated in the French version, and recorded a single, "Belle", a duet with French singer Daniel Balavoine. The song was a cover of ABBA's 1976 instrumental track "Arrival". As the single "Belle" sold well in France, Cameron Mackintosh wanted to stage an English-language version of the show in London, with the French lyrics translated by David Wood and Don Black; Andersson and Ulvaeus got involved in the project, and contributed with one new song, "The Seeker". "Abbacadabra" premièred on 8 December 1983 at The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in London, to mixed reviews and full houses for eight weeks, closing on 21 January 1984. Lyngstad was also involved in this production, recording "Belle" in English as "Time", a duet with actor and singer B. A. Robertson: the single sold well, and was produced and recorded by Andersson and Ulvaeus.

All four members made their final public appearance, as four friends more than as ABBA, in January 1986, when they recorded a video of themselves performing an acoustic version of "Tivedshambo", which was the first song written by their manager, Stig Anderson, for a Swedish TV show honouring Anderson on his 55th birthday. The four had not seen each other for more than two years. That same year they also performed privately at another friend's 40th birthday: their old tour manager, Claes af Geijerstam. They sang a self-written song titled "Der Kleine Franz" that was later to resurface in Chess. Also in 1986, ABBA Live was released, featuring selections of live performances from the group's 1977 and 1979 tours. The four members were guests at the 50th birthday of Görel Hanser in 1999. Hanser was a long-time friend of all four, and also former secretary of Stig Anderson. Honouring Görel, ABBA performed a Swedish birthday song "Med En Enkel Tulipan" a cappella.
Benny Andersson has on several occasions performed old ABBA songs. In June 1992, he and Ulvaeus appeared with U2 at a Stockholm concert, singing the chorus of "Dancing Queen", and a few years later during the final performance of the B & B in Concert in Stockholm, Andersson joined the cast for an encore at the piano. Andersson frequently adds an ABBA song to the playlist when he performs with his BAO band. He also played the piano during new recordings of the ABBA songs "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room" with opera singer Anne Sofie von Otter, and "When All Is Said and Done" with Swede Viktoria Tolstoy. In 2002, Andersson and Ulvaeus both performed an a cappella rendition of the first verse of "Fernando" as they accepted their Ivor Novello award in London. Lyngstad performed and recorded an a cappella version of "Dancing Queen" with the Swedish group The Real Group in 1993, and has also re-recorded "I Have a Dream" with Swiss singer Dan Daniell in 2003.

As a practical matter, no president can be aware of everything going on in the sprawling government he theoretically manages. But as a matter of politics, Mr. Obama’s plea of ignorance may do less to deflect blame than to prompt new questions about just how much in charge he really is.
In recent days, the president’s health and human services secretary said that despite internal concerns and a failed test run Mr. Obama was not told about serious problems with the new program’s website until it was rolled out this month. Other officials said the president was not aware that the National Security Agency was tapping the phone of Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and other friendly leaders until this summer, although intelligence officials said Tuesday that others in the White House had known.
Opposition lawmakers and pundits have seized on the White House explanations to accuse Mr. Obama of being a “bystander president,” as the Republican National Committee put it. Even some Democrats are scratching their heads at the seeming detachment from significant matters. MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” ran a montage of clips showing Mr. Obama or his aides disclaiming presidential knowledge of various issues as well as a graphic titled “Implausible Deniability.”
“It seems to me there’s a pattern here — with any bad news coming out of the administration, the excuse is the president just didn’t know about it,” said Representative Adam Kinzinger, Republican of Illinois.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday deflected charges that the administration misled the American people about being able to keep their health plans under ObamaCare -- claiming that despite thousands of cancellation notices, the White House is keeping its promise.
Sebelius testified at a House hearing that originally was called to address the glitch-ridden ObamaCare website. Sebelius personally apologized for those failures and told lawmakers: "Hold me accountable for the debacle. I'm responsible."
Sebelius took the blame for giving the impression that the website was ready for launch before Oct. 1. "I told the president we were ready to go. Clearly, I was wrong," she said.
But Republicans also used the opportunity to press Sebelius on President Obama's repeated claims that people who like their current health plans can keep them under the new law. Thousands of cancellation notices going out to consumers have sharply challenged that claim.
"The news seems to get worse by the day," Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said at the start of the hearing before his committee. From the outset, Upton grilled Sebelius on those notices, asking why a change was made allowing certain insurance policies to be ruled ineligible under ObamaCare.
Sebelius, however, claimed: "There was no change."
Sebelius laid out a highly nuanced position.

In three and a half grueling hours of testimony before a House committee, Ms. Sebelius apologized for the missteps and problems in efforts to carry out the president’s most important domestic initiative.
But nothing Ms. Sebelius said at the hearing could overcome the stark message displayed on a large video screen that showed a page from HealthCare.gov: “The system is down at the moment. We are experiencing technical difficulties and hope to have them resolved soon. Please try again later.”
That message undercut Ms. Sebelius’s statements that the federal online insurance marketplace was improving every day and would be fully functional and able to accommodate millions of users by Nov. 30 — two weeks before the deadline for buying coverage on Jan. 1.
Ms. Sebelius, testifying under oath before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said she had told Mr. Obama that “we were ready to go” with the insurance website before it opened on Oct. 1.
“Clearly I was wrong,” she said.
In her testimony, Ms. Sebelius came across as a hapless official, aloof from many operational decisions about the website, which was conceived as a shopping mall for health insurance products.
She said she was as surprised as anyone when the website collapsed on Oct. 1, under pressure from millions of users, and was crippled by technical problems in subsequent days.
“No one anticipated this level of problems,” Ms. Sebelius said. While she was aware of the risks in operating a big new system, she said, “no one indicated that this could possibly go this wrong.”
In hindsight, she said, “we should have anticipated, we should have planned better, we should have tested better.”
Ms. Sebelius told the committee: “Hold me accountable for the debacle. I’m responsible.”
