I'm sure that exim will work just fine if you compile it
up following the instructions in the package.

That's surprising. Does it fail during configure or during
compilation? Can you post any relevant error messages?

The shell-level tools are in scripts/ in the distribution,
and the CGI scripts in web/cgi-bin. You should be able to
install it using the install.pl program in the base
directory of the distribution.
