We were using courier but now use dovecot as it's easier to configure
and seems a lot faster.

Dovecot can also has a PLAIN_MD5 authentication mechanism which allows
it to authenticate to an existing vmail database without modification.

I don't use the IMAP functionality but both Courier and Dovecot support
this.
