I use iftop (I love it) version 0.16. I seem to have some problem getting name resolution to work. I seems to some of the time and then it doesn't.
Could someone fill me in on what I should know that I don't?

Can you tell us what platform you're on and what resolver option you are using?
Assuming you're using something other that netdb_1thread, iftop will attempt to resolve multiple addresses simultaneously, however it is possible that it will encounter a number of hosts for which the DNS servers are unavailable, in which case it will wait to time out on each of these hosts. If you encounter several of these at once, it will give the appearance of name resolution stopping.

Paul,
Well, I know it sounds old but we are using RedHat release 6.2 on this particular machine. It does the job when it comes to routing.
I have not asked my son (who does alot of re-compiling of the kernel for various purposes) but I wouldn't be surprised if the kernel is different than the standard Red-Hat 6.2 kernel.
This particular box is a router for our wireless network. I use it extensively to monitor traffic. It connects to our ISP.
Give me a clue where to look for "netdb_1thread" and I'll take a look.

Should work fine on RH6.2.

That shouldn't make any difference.

It's one of the options that you can give to the ./configure script. I'm assuming you built from source, in which case can you post your config.log.
Can you describe the exact symptoms? I'm assuming that it is still showing traffic, but that it starts using IP addresses rather than names after some point.
Paul
ok,
The dns server is on the same box. The ip's I'm most interested in is our private IP's. They are kept in the /etc/hosts /file.
